Tooth Extractions in Billings, Montana
Facing a tooth extraction can feel stressful, especially if you are already dealing with pain. At Summit Oral Surgery & Implant Center, our oral surgeons handle everything from a single damaged tooth to multiple extractions in a single visit, with anesthesia options to keep you comfortable and a plan for what comes next.
When a tooth needs to come out
Keeping your natural teeth is always the goal, but sometimes removing a tooth is the healthiest option. Your dentist may refer you for an extraction when there is:
- Decay or damage too extensive to repair with a filling, crown, or root canal;
- A tooth that is impacted or trapped below the gum line;
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened a tooth;
- A cracked or broken tooth that cannot be restored;
- Crowding that requires relief before orthodontic treatment.
Types of tooth extractions we perform

Simple Extractions
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible above the gum line. The dentist numbs the area with local anesthesia, then gently loosens and lifts the tooth out.
Most simple extractions are quick, and many patients return to their normal routine within a day or two.

Multiple Extractions
When several teeth need to come out, removing them in one visit usually means one recovery period instead of several.
You may notice more soreness or bleeding than with a single tooth, but with good aftercare, healing typically goes smoothly.

What to expect from start to finish
Whenever possible, we complete the extraction at your first visit. We coordinate with your referring dentist or physician in advance, and if your medical history or treatment plan is more complex, we schedule a consultation first so your surgeon can review everything with you.
Plan to arrive 15 minutes early with your referral slip and any x-rays, a list of current medications, your ID, and your insurance card. Patients under 18 need a parent or guardian present.
Replacing a tooth after an extraction
Natural teeth stimulate the jawbone every time you chew. When you remove a tooth and don’t replace it, the bone in that area can gradually shrink, and neighboring teeth may shift. Planning your replacement early keeps more options open.
- Dental implants replace a single tooth or several teeth with a permanent, natural-looking result;
- Bone grafting rebuilds or preserves the jawbone so an implant has a solid foundation;
- A full-arch hybrid implant bridge replaces an entire upper or lower set of teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia before the extraction begins, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Nitrous oxide or general anesthesia may be recommended for more complex cases, and any soreness afterward is managed with medication as directed.
Can my tooth be removed on the first visit?
Whenever possible, yes. Summit Oral Surgery & Implant Center coordinates with your referring dentist in advance. If your medical history or treatment plan is more involved, a consultation is scheduled first.
What should I avoid after a tooth extraction?
Avoid drinking through a straw and drinking alcohol for 72 hours, and skip smoking and strenuous exercise for at least a day. These can disturb the blood clot and slow healing. Call the office if the pain does not respond to medication.
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
Most patients return to their normal routine within a few days, although the extraction site continues to heal over the following weeks. Surgical and multiple extractions may need a little more downtime.
Does insurance cover tooth extractions?
Summit Oral Surgery & Implant Center is a preferred provider for Delta Dental, MetLife, and Guardian, and accepts out-of-network benefits. Financing is available through PatientFi, CareCredit, and Sunbit.
